This Week, I Accomplished Something Huge. I Finished My Chapbook.

I hesitated to mention it in this space prior to now, but I’ve spent the last three months working tirelessly on a chapbook manuscript. This past Monday, I put the finishing touches on my work and received the cover art, which I commissioned from my friend and colleague, Lito. …

I Was Skeptical About Going Gluten-Free For My Thyroid Disease, But I’m Glad I Did

If you’ve read any of my previous pieces on fatphobia, you might be able to infer that I have a general distaste for diet culture. I turned my nose up at Keto and Paleo diet trends. My mother’s 6-year-long vegan lifestyle recently came to a close because she was frequently anemic and got sick far too often due to nutrient deficiencies. The Jewish People: We’re Not Superstitious, But We’re A Little Stitious

If you’ve ever faced a set of challenges, difficulties, or setbacks in a brief succession, sympathetic listeners may have offered up this American colloquialism: “When it rains, it pours.” This informal idiom, an observation on the nature of misfortune, is something of a companion to the widespread thought that “bad…

ADHD: I’m Telling You, It’s Affecting Everything

There are few things I enjoy more than researching. Different topics will catch my interest and suddenly, there’s an itch being scratched that I completely forgot about. Before I know it, it’s 4 in the morning, and I’ve been reading about all the people who died while climbing Mount Everest…

The Complexities of Jewish Racial Identity, Explained

A number of recent celebrity statements continue to have very real, life-threatening ramifications for the Jewish community. I’d like to dispel some of the disinformation perpetuated by these statements. — In the last six weeks or so, there has been a dramatic uptick in vocal antisemitism here in the United States. Several celebrities spewing both disinformation and general vitriol have directly impacted the safety of the American Jewish people.

Two Things This Week Reminded Me of Our Resilience, Even As We Remember the Tree of Life Tragedy

An interesting juxtaposition of events took place around me this past week. As the Pittsburgh Jewish community marked the anniversary of the most deadly antisemitic attack in American history, which happened here four years ago, I was reminded of the resilience of the Jewish people and of humanity as a…

On Forgiveness

Not long ago, I sat down and watched an episode of Red Table Talk featuring Jennette McCurdy, former Nickelodeon actress and author of the recently published memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. The title of the book has elicited shock from many. Yet, as McCurdy sits down and tells a…

Confession: I was the struggling camper.

I’m an introvert who is occasionally mistaken for an extravert. It’s fair that some people believe I am extraverted; Even if I’m unfamiliar with a few of the folks I’m speaking with, I can normally hold a decent conversation, and in a lot of situations, I don’t have any trouble…
